Workers may receive a resident-tax bill after leaving a job, even without a new salary.
This does not automatically mean the municipality charged the same tax twice.
Individual resident tax is generally calculated from income earned during the previous calendar year.
For employees, an employer normally withholds the annual amount from monthly pay between June and the following May.
If an employee leaves before that cycle ends, however, the employer may no longer be able to make the remaining deductions.
Unless the balance is collected at once or a new employer continues withholding, the municipality switches it to ordinary collection and sends a notice.
A different notice may also arrive after the next June because income earned before retirement is used to calculate the next year's tax.
Thus, even without current wages, a former employee may still owe resident tax connected to earlier earnings.
The tax year and payment period on the notice clarify which amount is due.
How is individual resident tax generally calculated?
It is based on the previous year's income.
It is based only on current monthly wages.
It is fixed at the same amount nationwide.
It is calculated only after employment ends.

Why may a municipality send a bill after a worker leaves?
All former employers must repay the worker's tax.
The previous year's income is automatically excluded entirely.
