The guide said this building is an Important Cultural Property, but not a National Treasure. I thought those were completely separate ranks.
案内では、この建物は重要文化財だけれど国宝ではないと言っていたね。二つは完全に別の区分だと思っていたよ。
Not exactly. National Treasures are selected from among Important Cultural Properties, so they remain inside that broader category.
厳密には違うよ。国宝は重要文化財の中から選ばれるから、そのより広い区分の中に含まれたままなの。
Then a table of Important Cultural Properties may already include the National Treasures?
では、重要文化財の表には、すでに国宝が含まれていることがあるの？
Yes. The Agency for Cultural Affairs even notes that its Important Cultural Property total includes them.
そう。文化庁も、重要文化財の合計には国宝を含むと注記しているよ。
So I should not add the two totals together when comparing the national figures.
では、国の件数を比べるとき、二つの合計を足してはいけないんだね。
Right. One figure is contained within the other.
そのとおり。一方の件数は、もう一方の中に含まれているの。
What does Mei explain about National Treasures?
国宝について、Meiは何を説明していますか。

Are all Important Cultural Properties automatically National Treasures?
すべての重要文化財が自動的に国宝になるの？
No. National Treasures are the smaller group judged especially valuable from a global cultural perspective.
違うよ。国宝は、世界的な文化の観点から特に価値が高いと判断された、より小さなグループなの。
And the protection starts only after the higher title is given?
では、保護は上位の呼び名が与えられてから始まるの？
No again. Important Cultural Properties are already designated for protection.
それも違うよ。重要文化財は、すでに保護のために指定されているの。
Then the higher title shows exceptional value within a protected group.
では、上位の呼び名は、保護されているグループの中で特に高い価値を示すんだね。
Exactly. The categories are nested rather than side by side.
そのとおり。二つの区分は横並びではなく、入れ子になっているの。

be selected from among + 複数名詞で、ある集団の中から選ばれることを表します。本文例: National Treasures are selected from among Important Cultural Properties.（国宝は重要文化財の中から選ばれます）。独立例: Three finalists were selected from among forty applicants.（40人の応募者の中から3人の最終候補が選ばれました。）

〜の中にとどまる
remain inside + 名詞で、状態が変わっても範囲の内側にとどまることを表します。本文例: they remain inside that broader category（それらはその広い区分の中にとどまる）。独立例: The trail remains inside the national park.（その遊歩道は国立公園の中に収まっています。）

〜を含む
include + 名詞で、全体の中にある項目を含むことを表します。本文例: may already include the National Treasures（すでに国宝を含んでいることがある）。独立例: The fee includes equipment rental.（料金には用具の貸し出しが含まれます。）

〜の中に含まれている
be contained within + 名詞で、あるものが別の全体の範囲内に含まれることを表します。本文例: One figure is contained within the other.（一方の件数はもう一方の中に含まれます）。独立例: The appendix is contained within the final report.（付録は最終報告書の中に収められています。）
