Welcome to the Everyday Money Design Exhibition.
「暮らしの中のお金のデザイン展」へようこそ。
The exhibition opens at ten and includes enlarged photographs of coin edges from several countries.
展示は10時に始まり、いくつかの国の硬貨の側面を拡大した写真が含まれています。
Please keep food and drinks outside the gallery.
飲食物はギャラリーの外に置いてください。
The real coins are protected in glass cases, so visitors must not touch them.
本物の硬貨はガラスケースで保護されているため、来館者は触れてはいけません。
However, you are allowed to handle the metal sample disks at the final table.
ただし、最後のテーブルにある金属製のサンプル円盤は手に取ってかまいません。

These sample edges do not all feel the same. Was that done on purpose?
このサンプル、縁の手触りが全部同じじゃないね。わざとそうしてあるの？
Yes. Look at the enlarged picture of the new 500-yen coin.
そうだよ。新しい500円硬貨の拡大写真を見て。
Oh, some of the slanted ridges are different from the others.
あ、本当だ。斜めのギザの一部だけ、ほかと違うね。
The Japan Mint calls this design helical ridges with two different pitches.
造幣局では、このデザインを「異形斜めギザ」と呼んでいるんだ。
Does the unusual pattern make the coin harder to copy?
その変わった模様で、硬貨をまねして作るのが難しくなるの？
Exactly. It is one of the coin's anti-counterfeiting features.
そのとおり。硬貨に使われている偽造防止技術の一つなんだ。
So the edge does more than simply complete the coin's shape.
じゃあ、縁は硬貨の形を整えているだけじゃないんだね。
Right. Coin edges can be plain, reeded, lettered, or decorated.
そう。硬貨の縁には、滑らかなもの、ギザ付き、文字入り、装飾付きなどがあるよ。
I use coins every week, but I had never really looked at their edges.
毎週硬貨を使っているのに、縁をちゃんと見たことはなかったな。
Useful design often hides in the part people almost never notice.
役に立つデザインって、みんながほとんど見ないところに隠れていることが多いんだね。

単に〜する以上の働きをする
一つの役割だけでなく、別の働きもあると伝える表現です。例: This light does more than show the time.（このライトは時刻を示す以上の働きをします。）
