指示代名詞

this , these は 物理的・時間的・心理的 に 近いもの、 that , those は 遠いものをさします。

This is my car, and that is Susan's.

( これは私の車で、あれはスーザンのです。 )

These are very old books.

( これらは大変古い本です。 )

Those are my shoes.

( それらが私の靴です。 )

Of the two methods, this seems to be better than that.

   電話やテレビなどで人を指す場合に用います。[ 英 ] では、話し手に this、話し相手に that を用いますが [ 米 ] では両方とも this で表します。

who などの関係代名詞を伴って 「 ～ な人々 」 という意味を表す場合があります。

   this , that , these , those を名詞の直前に置くことで 「 この ～ 」 「 その ～ 」 など限定する形容詞の働きをしたり、その他の語句を修飾する副詞の働きをすることもあります。。

    be afraid , believe , call , expect , hope , guess , fear , imagine , say , speak , suppose , tell , think などの動詞と伴に用いられ that 節の代用となります。

「 do so 」 という形で前の文の動詞句の代用となります。

He was asked to leave the seat, but he refused to do so.

    appear , be , become , find , remain , seem などの動詞と伴に用いられ、前の文の名詞や形容詞の代用となります。

She was, Joe thought, really very pretty when she chose to be so.
