時を表す前置詞の使い分け

Jeans are being much worn at present.

He breathed deeply before entering his boss's office.

( 彼は上司のいる部屋に入る前に深呼吸をした。 )

   after は 過去を表す文のなかで 「 ～ の後に 」 を表す場合に用いられ、未来を表す文の中で 「 ～ の後に 」 を表す場合には in を用いられる傾向にあるが、実際にはその反対も可能である。 また 「 ～ 以後 ( 以降 ) 」 という意味では after が用いられます。

I saw her after a month.

( 1 ヵ月後に彼女に会った。 )

She came back after a few day.

( 彼女は 2, 3 日して戻った。 )

Are you free after school？

( 放課後はあいてますか。 )

I shall be at home after eight o'clock.

( 8 時以降は家にいる予定です。 )

He was breathless after running.

( 彼は走ったあと息を切らした。 )

   after が 「 ～ 経過した後に 」 という意味であることに対し、in は 「 ～ 経過した時点で 」 という意味になります。 また 「 ～ 以内に 」 という意味では、 in の代わりに within を用いることもできます。

She will be back in a few days.

( 彼女は 2, 3 日すれば戻るでしょう。 )

She will come back within a few days.

( 彼女は 2, 3 日以内に戻るでしょう。 )

He should get to your house in an hour.

( 彼は一時間で君の家に着くはずだ。 )

「 finish 」「 be there 」 など、動作や状態の完了を表す動詞と共に用いられることが多い。

We should be there by noon.

( 正午までにはそこに着くはずだ。 )

I will finish this work by 5 o'clock.

( 私は 5 時までにこの仕事を終えるつもりです。 )

The wind will die by evening.

( 風は夕方までにやむだろう。 )

   状態動詞や継続的動作を表す動詞と共に用いられることが多い。 また till と untill については意味は同じであるが、期間の終わりを示すより時間の継続を強調する場合や 文頭に用いられる場合には until を用いられることが多い。

I'll stay there till six o'clock.

( 私は 6 時までそこにいます。 )

She did not come until two.

( 彼女は 2 時まで来なかった。 )

Until yesterday I had known nothing about it.

( きのうまで、私はそのことを何もしらなかった。 )

from は 「 ある時から 」 という単に時の起点だけを示すので完了形以外の時制が用いられます。

From childhood I dreamed of being a pastry cook.

( ケーキ職人は小さい頃からの夢でした。 )

Ten minutes from now we will go.

( 今から 10 分後に出る。 )

He worked a lot from morning till night.

( 彼は朝から晩までよく働く。 )

   since は 継続した動作や状態の起点を表し完了形と共に用いるのが原則ですが、他の時制が用いられる場合もあります。

They have been very happy together ever since their marriage.

( 彼らは結婚以来ずっとともに幸せに過ごしている。 )

Since when have you lived here？

( いつからここに住んでいるのですか。 )

It has been raining since last night.

( 昨夜からずっと雨が降っている。 )

   「 ( 特定の期間の ) 間中ずっと 」 または 「 ( 特定の期間 ) の間に 」 というように 2 つの意味があります。

I stayed at my uncle's during the summer. － [ ある特定の期間の全部 ]

( 僕は夏の間、おじさんの家に滞在した。 )

She found the ring that she had lost during the journey. － [ ある特定の期間の一部 ]

( 彼女は旅行中になくした指輪を見つけた。 )

He kept silent during the meeting. － [ ある特定の期間の全部 ]

( 彼は会議中ずっと黙ったままだった。 )

I must call him sometimes during the morning. － [ ある特定の期間の一部 ]

( 朝のうちに彼に電話をしなければいけない。 )

The hotel remains closed during the winter. － [ ある特定の期間の全部 ]

( そのホテルは冬の間は閉まったままである。 )

   during が 「 特定の期間 」 を目的語にとるのに対し for は 「 不特定の期間 」 を目的語にすることが多い。 また継続や状態を表す動詞の後では for が省略されることもあります。

We walked for two hours.

( 私たちは２時間歩いた。 )

   during だと期間の一部か全部かが区別できないため、期間の全部であることを明確に示したい場合は through を用います。

We stayed awake through the night.

( 私たちは徹夜をした。 )

He was sick through the winter.

( 彼は冬の間ずっと病気だった。 )

She slept through the lesson.

( 彼女は授業の間ずっと寝ていた。 )

He will call for me about six.

( 彼が 6 時ごろ迎えにくるだろう。 )

( 5 時ごろお待ちしています )

We had a lot of snow about this time last year.

( 昨年の今ごろは大雪だった。 )

I will pick you up around six.

( 6 時頃車で迎えにきます。 )

She'll be available around four o'clock.

( 彼女は 4 時頃なら電話に出られると思います。 )

There's a lot of traffic on the roads around this time of the day.

( この時間帯は道路が混雑する。 )

The wind woke toward evening.

( 夕方近くになって風が吹き出した。 )

There was a weak earthquake toward dawn this morning.
