at … 場所の一点 ( 比較的狭い場所 ) を表します。
in … 広い場所や何かの中にいることを表します。

from - to - for - toward の使い分け
from … 出発点を表します。
to … 到達点、または到達点への方向を表します。
for … 行き先や目的地を表します。
toward … 運動の方向を表します。

2 - 4. toward … 運動や位置の方向を表します。
The road inclines toward the river.
( その道路は川に向かって下っている。 )
Our plane is flying toward the south.

in - into - out - out of - within の使い分け
in … 中の位置を表します。
out … 外の位置、または外の位置への運動を表します。
into … 外から中へ向かう運動や方向を表します。
out of … 中から外へ向かう運動や方向を表します。
within … 「 ( 時間・距離・範囲など ) ～ の範囲内で 」を表します。
3 - 1. in … 中の位置を表します。
They are playing in the room.
( 彼らは部屋の中で遊んでいる。 )
She stayed in the house all day.
( 彼女は１日じゅう家にいました。 )
3 - 2. out … 外の位置を表します。
He looked out the window.
( 彼は窓の外を見た。 )

3 - 3. into … 外から中へ向かう運動や方向を表します。
I steal into the house.

3 - 4. out of … 中から外へ向かう運動や方向を表します。
They got out of the car.

A boat suddenly appeared out of the mist.

( 銀行から少し金をひきださなければならない。 )
He was already out of hearing.
( 彼はもう聞こえないところにいた。 )
3 - 5. within … 「 ( 時間・距離・範囲など ) ～ の範囲内で 」を表します。
Our school is within five minutes' walk of my house.
( 学校は家から歩いて 5 分以内の所にある。 )
The secretary is within call all the time.
( 秘書はいつも声の届くところに待機しています。 )
We came within sight of land.
( 我々は陸から見える所へ来た。 )
on - over - above - up の使い分け
on … 場所の接触を表します。
over … 離れた 「 真上の位置 」 を表します。
above … 上方の位置を表します。
up … 「 下から上に 」 の方向を表します。
4 - 1. on … 場所の接触を表します。
on は基本的に 「 接触 」 を表すため、必ずしも 「 上 」 ではない。
There is a book on the desk.
( 机の上に本がある。 )
There is a lamp on the ceiling.
( 天井にランプが付いている。 )
Look at the picture on the wall.

4 - 2. over … 離れた 「 真上の位置 」 を表します。
over は接触した位置を表して 「 ～の上をおおって 」 という意味でも用いられます。
A bridge is over the river.
( 橋が川の上にかかっている。 )
The plane flew over the mountain.
( 飛行機は山の上を飛んだ。 )
She threw a shawl over her shoulders.
( 彼女は急いでショールを肩にかけた。 )
4 - 3. above … 上方の位置を表します。
above は真上も含めての上方の位置を表すため、over の代わりに使用することもできる。
Birds are flying above the trees.
( 鳥が木の上を飛んでいる。 )
The peak rises above the clouds.
( その峰は雲の上にそびえている。 )
There is a waterfall above the bridge.
( 橋の上手に滝がある。 )
The city is fifty miles above London.
( その町はロンドンの北 50 マイルにある。 )
4 - 4. up … 「 下から上に 」 の方向を表します。
My room is up the stairs.
( 私の部屋は階上にある。 )
We were exhausted by the climb up the hill.
( その丘を登ってへとへとに疲れた。 )
The cat is up the tree.
( 猫は木の上にいる。 )
beneath - under - below - down の使い分け
beneath … 「 下 」 を表します。
under … 離れた 「 真下の位置 」 を表します。
below … 下方の位置を表します。
down … 「 上から下に 」 の方向を表します。
5 - 1. beneath … 「 下 」 を表します。
接触する場合は on の反対の意味になりますが、接触しない場合は above の反対の意味になります。
The money was hidden beneath the floorboards.
( 金は床板の下に隠されていた。 )
The earth lay beneath a blanket of snow.
( 地面は一面の雪に覆われていた。 )
5 - 2. under … 離れた 「 真下の位置 」 を表します。
under は接触した位置を表して 「 ～ におおわれた 」 という意味でも用いられます。
The boat passed under the bridge.
( 船は橋の下を通った。 )
He found the box under the table.
( 彼はテーブルの下にその箱を見つけた。 )
He was wearing a vest under his coat.
( 上着の下にチョッキを着ていた。 )
The entire town was under water.
( 町全体が水没した。 )
5 - 3. below … 下方の位置を表します。
below は真下も含めての下方の位置を表すため、under の代わりに使用することもできる。
The sun sank below the horizon.
( 太陽は地平線下に没した。 )
The falls are some distance below the bridge.
( その滝は橋の少し下流にあります。 )
Write your name below mine.
( あなたは名前を私の名前の下に書きなさい。 )
5 - 4. down … 「 上から下に 」 の方向を表します。
The bridge is far down the river.
( その橋はずっと下流にある。 )
He laid down the gun.
( 彼は銃を下に置いた。 )
I threw down the newspaper.
( 私は新聞を投げ出した。 )
before - in front of - after - behind の使い分け
before … 呼び出されて「 人の前に 」 という意味を表します。
in front of … 物・建物の正面 [ 前方 ] や 人の面前 を表します。
after … 。「 人の後に 」 という意味を表します。
behind … 。人や物・建物の背後 [ 後方 ] を表します。
6 - 1. before … 呼び出されて「 人の前に 」 という意味を表します。
建物の前位置にはふつう in front of が用いられ、 before はあまり用いられない。
He bowed before the King.
( 彼は王の前で頭を下げた。 )
I can't hold up my head before him.
( あの人の前では頭が上がらない。 )
Soon the landscape unfolded before them.
( まもなく広々とした光景が彼らの眼前に開けた。 )
6 - 2. in front of … 物・建物の正面 [ 前方 ] や 人の面前 を表します。
He is in front of the door.
( 彼はドアの前にいます。 )
Let's meet in front of the theater.
( 劇場の前であいましょう。 )
There is a bank in front of the station.
( 駅前には銀行がある。 )
He sat in the seat immediately in front of me.
( 彼は私のすぐ前の席に座った。 )
Don't use swearwords in front of the children.
( 子供のいるところで口汚い言葉は使うな。 )
6 - 3. after … 「 人の後に 」 という意味を表します。
建物の後位置にはふつう behind が用いられ、 after はあまり用いられない。
She followed after him.
( 彼女は彼のあとについていった。 )
Shut the door after you.
( 入ったらドアを閉めなさい。 )
6 - 4. behind … 人や物・建物の背後 [ 後方 ] を表します。
She sneaked up behind him.
( 彼女は彼の後ろへそっと近寄っていった。 )
Shut the door behind you.
( 入ったらドアを閉めなさい。 )
The boy was hiding behind a door.
( その子はドアの後ろに隠れていた。 )
The sun went behind the clouds.
( 太陽が雲の中へ入った。 )
Customers are not allowed behind the counter.
( お客様はカウンターの後ろには入れません。 )
between - amongの使い分け
between … 原則として 「 2 つのものの間 」 を表します。
among … まとまった 「 3 つ以上のものの間 」 を表します。
7 - 1. between … 原則として 「 2 つのものの間 」 を表します。
between は原則として 「 2 つのものの間 」を表すため、 2 つの複数形か 2 つをつなぐ and を持つ目的語がきます。また個別の相互関係を示す場合には 3 つ以上の場合にも用います。
There is a long wait between trains.
( 列車の待ち時間が長い。 )
Nagoya lies between Tokyo and Osaka.
( 名古屋と東京と大阪の間にある。 )
Affection sprang up between them.
( 二人の間に愛情が芽生えた。 )
Divide these apples between you three.
( これらのりんごを 3 人で分けなさい。 )
The three children saved fifty pounds between them.
( その 3 人の子供たちは共同で 50 ポンドためた。 )
7 - 2. among … まとまった 「 3 つ以上のものの間 」 を表します。
She is very popular among the boys.
( 彼女は男の子の間でもとても人気がある。 )
Many weeds were growing among the flowers.
( 花の間に多くの雑草が生えていた。 )
A girl approached the king from among the crowd.
( 一人の少女が群衆の中から王様に近づいた。 )
Among his novels, I like this best.
( 彼の小説の中でこれが一番好きだ。 )
There were 20 failures among 50 applicants.
( 50 人の応募者のうち 20 人が不合格となった。 )
near - by - beside の使い分け
near … 「 近くに 」「 接近して 」 という意味で 3 つの中では一番距離が遠い。
by … 「 ～ のそばに 」 という意味を表します。
beside … 「 ( ～ と横に並んで ) ～ のそばに 」 という意味で 3 つの中で一番距離が近い。
8 - 1. near … 「 近くに 」「 接近して 」 という意味で 3 つの中では一番距離が遠い。
前置詞として用いられる時も比較変化があります。
Our school is near the station.
( 私達の学校は駅に近い。 )
Bring your chair nearer the fire.
( いすをもっと火の近くに寄せなさい。 )
The parking spaces nearest the door are reserved for executives.
( ドアにいちばん近い駐車場所は重役専用です。 )
8 - 2. by … 「 ～ のそばに 」 という意味を表します。
She has a cottage by the sea.
( 彼女は海辺に別荘を持っている。 )
He went by me without noticing me.
( 彼は私に気づかず私のそばを通り過ぎた。 )
There is a dog by the door.
( ドアの側に犬がいます。 )
8 - 3. beside … 「 ( ～ と横に並んで ) ～ のそばに 」 という意味で 3 つの中で一番距離が近い。
He seated himself beside her.
( 彼は彼女の横に腰かけた。 )
He parked his car beside the sidewalk.
( 彼は車を歩道の脇に停めた。 )
She was running beside me.
( 彼女は私と並んで走った。 )
round - around - about の使い分け
round … 「 ～ の周りに 」「 ～ を ( ぐるりと ) 回って 」 という意味を表します。＜ 英国 ＞
around … 「 ～ の周りに 」「 ～ を ( ぐるりと ) 回って 」 という意味を表します。＜ 米国 ＞
about … 「 ～ のあたりに 」「 ～ の近くに 」という意味を表します。＜ 英国 ＞
9 - 1. round … 「 ～ の周りに 」「 ～ を ( ぐるりと ) 回って 」 という意味を表します。＜ 英国 ＞
The boys crowded round the baseball player.
( 少年たちはその野球選手の周りにどっと集まった。 )
She looked round her.
( 彼女はあたりを見回した。 )
The members of the committee sat round the table.
( 委員たちはテーブルを囲んで着席した。 )
9 - 2. around … 「 ～ の周りに 」「 ～ を ( ぐるりと ) 回って 」 という意味を表します。＜ 米国 ＞
We sat around the fire in a circle.
( 私たちは火の周りに円を描いて座った。 )
Her dream is to travel around the world.
( 彼女の夢は世界一周旅行をすることです。 )
She looked around the room.
( 彼女は室内を見回した。 )
9 - 3. about … 「 ～ のあたりに 」「 ～ の近くに 」という意味を表します。＜ 英国 ＞
この用法では ＜ 米 ＞ だとふつう around を用います。
Her house is somewhere about here.
( 彼女の家どこかこの辺だ。 )
Please don't run about the room.
( 部屋の中を走り回らないでちょうだい。 )
They gathered about the fireplace.
( 彼らは暖炉の周りに集まった。 )
He was walking about the streets.
( 彼は街のあちこちを歩きまわった。 )
