on の用法

   「 ～ の表面に 」「 ～ の上に 」「 ～ に 」という意味で場所の接触を表す。基本的に 「 接触 」 を表すため、必ずしも 「 上 」 ではない。

There is a book on the desk.

( 机の上に本がある。 )

There is a lamp on the ceiling.

( 天井にランプが付いている。 )

Look at the picture on the wall.

( 壁の絵を見て。 )

「 ～ にくっつけて 」「 ～ の身につけて 」という意味で付着や所持を表す。

I have no money on me.

( 私はお金を持ち合わせていない。 )

The dog is on a chain.

( 犬は鎖につながれている。 )

That suit looks good on you.

( あのスーツは君によく似合う。 )

「 ～ で 」「 ～ を軸にして 」という意味で支えや支持を表す。

He carried his grandfather on his back.

( 彼はおじいさんを背中におぶって行った。 )

I walked on tiptoe so as not to wake the baby.

( 私は赤ちゃんが目を覚まさないようにつま先で歩いた。 )

She bowed down on her knees in prayer.

( 彼女はひざまずいて祈った。 )

「 ～ に接して 」「 ～ に面して 」「 ～ に沿って 」という意味で近接を表す。

New York is on the Hudson River.

( ニューヨークは、ハドソン川に面している。 )

There is a lake on the east of the village.

( 村の東に接して湖がある。 )

You will find the restaurant on your right.

( そのレストランは右手にありますよ。 )

The examinations will begin on Monday next week.

( 試験は来週の月曜日から始まる。 )

They went caroling on Christmas Day.

( 彼らはクリスマスの日に聖歌を歌いに行った。 )

She usually calls me from Tokyo on Monday evenings.

( 彼女は東京からたいてい月曜の夜に私に電話をかけてくる。 )

「 ～ するとすぐに 」「 ～ と同時に 」という意味で時間の接触を表す。

On his arrival at the airport, he telephoned to his wife.

( 空港につくとすぐに彼は妻に電話した。 )

They gave me a vase on my retirement.

( 私の退職のとき皆は花瓶を贈ってくれた。 )

「 ～ に基づいて 」「 ～ による 」という意味で根拠や理由を表す。

His testimony stands on facts.

( 彼の証言は事実に基づいている。 )

You should have acted on her advice.

( 君は彼女の忠告に従って行動すべきだった。 )

I swear on the Bible.

( 聖書にかけて誓います。 )

I'm managing scraping along on a small salary.

( 私は安月給でどうにか暮らしています。 )

( 彼は病気を理由に辞職した。 )

「 ～ の条件で 」「 ～ という条件で 」という意味で条件を表す。

They wanted to negotiate the contract on equal terms.

( 対等の条件で契約を結びたいと思った。 )

I will lend you some money on condition that you will repay it in a week.

( 1 週間で返すならお金を貸してあげる。 )

「 ～ 中で 」「 ～ の途中で 」という意味で運動の途中を表す。

( 警察官は勤務中に酒を飲むことは禁止されている。 )

「 ～ に向かって 」「 ～ をめがけて 」という意味で方向を表す。

「 ～ のために 」という意味で目的や用事を表す。

She is collecting on behalf of the blind.

( 彼女は盲人のために募金をしている。 )

「 ～ に対して 」「 ～ に当てて 」という意味で動作の対象を表す。

I am planning to call on her the day after tomorrow.

( 私は明日彼女を訪問するつもりだ。 )

He fell and hit his head on the floor.

( 彼は転んで頭を床にぶつけた。 )

He turned his back on the old tradition.

( 彼は古い伝統に背を向ける。 )

「 ～ に対して 」という意味で不利益を表す。

( そのジョークは私にあてつけたものだった。 )

( 私は彼に報復するつもりだ。 )

She is been cheating on her husband for years.

( 彼女は何年も夫を裏切ってきた。 )

( 私は彼女に先立たれた。 )

「 ～ に 」という意味で影響を表す。

( あなたの忠告は彼らに影響を及ぼすでしょう。 )

The work is a heavy tax on my health.

( その仕事は私の健康にとって負担だ )

「 ～ について 」「 ～ に関する 」という意味で関係を表す。

I would like to read books on Japanese history.

( 私は日本史に関する本が読みたい。 )

He collects information on UFOs.

( 彼はUFOに関する情報を収集している )

He is very rigid in his ideas on marriage.

( 結婚についての考え方について彼はとても厳格である。 )

「 ～ に関係して 」「 ～ に従事して 」「 ～ の一員で 」という意味で従事や所属を表す。

We are on murder case.

( 殺人事件を担当している。 )

We are in on the project.

( 私たちはその計画に関係している。 )

He is on the varsity in tennis.

( 彼はテニスの代表チームの一員である。 )

「 ～ して 」「 ～ 中で 」という意味で状態を表す。

( 家が燃えている。 )

( 彼女は休暇中です。 )

( 彼は少しもじっとしていない。 )

( 全従業員がストライキ中である。 )
