従位接続詞

   主節と従属節を結ぶ働きをする接続詞のこと。主節とは文の中心となる主要な節で、 従属節はその主節に対し名詞節、形容詞節、副詞節の働きを持って意味を付加します。

   名詞節を導く従位接続詞は that, if, whether の 3 つがあり、名詞の働きをするため文中で主語・補語・目的語となります。

That he's alive is certain.

＝ It is certain that he is alive.

( 彼が生きていることは確かだ。 )

The fact is that he is my close friend.

( 実は彼は私の親友なのだ。 )

I know that she is cute.

( 私は彼女がかわいいのを知っています。 )

He made it plain that he wanted to marry her.

( 彼は彼女と結婚したいということを明らかにした。 )

I can not tell if it will rain tomorrow.

( 明日雨が降るかどうかは私にはわかりません。 )

Whether he will recover is doubtful.

＝ It is doubtful whether he will recover.

( 彼が回復するかどうか疑わしい。 )

The question is whether he can do it or not.

( 問題は彼にそれができるかどうかだ。 )

   形容詞節を導く従位接続詞とは関係詞のことをいいます。関係詞の直前にある名詞 ( ＝ 先行詞 ) を従位接続詞で修飾します。関係詞については以下を参照。

We need a person who speaks English.

( 私たちは英語を話す人を必要としています。 )

What I say is true.

( 私の言うことは本当です。 )

This is the book ( which / that ) I've chosen.

( これは私が選んだ本です。 )

I gave her what little money I had.

( なけなしの金を全部彼女に与えた。 )

Could you tell me the bank where I can change money？

( お金を両替できる銀行を教えていただけませんか。 )

Wherever I am, I think of you.

( 私はどこにいてもあなたのことを思っている。 )

   従位接続詞によって導かれた副詞節は、時・場所・原因・理由・目的・結果・程度・条件・譲歩・比較 などを表します。従位接続詞には when, where, while, as, since, because, if, after, before, until, till などがあります。

He always speaks to me when he meets me on the street.

( 彼は通りで私に会うといつも話しかける。 )

Wherever I am, I think of you.

( 私はどこにいてもあなたのことを思っている。 )

Because she has a good figure, whatever she wears suits her.

( 彼女はスタイルがいいから、何を着てもよく似合う。 )

I spoke so slowly so that the children might understand me.

( 子供達が私の言うことを理解できるようにゆっくり話した。 )

So kind was she that everyone liked her.

( 彼女はとても親切だったのでみなに好かれた。 )

She is persistent though she doesn't look so.

( 彼女は見かけによらず頑張りやだ。 )

Do you mind if I open the window？

( 窓をあけてもよいでしょうか。 )

I'll do as you advise.

( ご忠告どおりいたします。 )

So long as I live, you shall want for nothing.

( 私が生きている限りお前に不自由はさせないぞ。 )
