無生物主語
無生物主語とは、人や生き物以外の無生物を主語として、あたかも意志があるかのように表現する構文のことで 「 ( 原因・条件など ) が ( 人 ) に ～ させる 」 という意味になります。英語特有の表現のため、日本語に訳す場合は無生物主語を副詞句のように解釈し、目的語を主語として考えると日本語らしい表現になります。
無生物主語の用法
2 - 1. 原因や理由が主語になる場合
His poor management caused us to discontinue the project.
( 彼のずさんな管理のせいで、私たちはその計画を中止せざるを得なかった。 )
The storm sank the boat.
( 嵐のためその船は沈んだ。 )
Illness prevented me from coming to school.
( 病気のため登校できなかった。 )
2 - 2. 条件や手段が主語になる場合
Hard training will fit them to run long distances.
( 厳しい訓練をすれば彼らは長距離を走れるようになる。 )
An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
( 一日１個のリンゴを食べれば医者はいらない。 )
This book gives us a good idea of economics.
( この本を読むと、経済学のことがよくわかる。 )
2 - 3. 時や場所が主語になる場合
A few minutes' walk brought us to the library.
( 数分歩けば図書館に着く。 )
Twenty years have passed like a dream.
( 二十年は夢のように過ぎた。 )
The American continent is the original home of tobacco.
( タバコの原産地はアメリカ大陸である。 )
This road will lead us to the museum.
( この道をいくと博物館に着く。 )
